Fastest IOS Upgrade

Here’s the fastest way I know of to update the IOS on a Cisco device that has USB ports.

Check the flash and see what image is on there and if it has the Web Based Device Manager installed. If it does not have the correct image on it and/or if it has the IOS with the Web Based Device Manager, delete them.

Switch#dir
Directory of flash:/

  526  -rwx        1048  Mar 30 2011 01:29:31 +00:00  multiple-fs

    2  drwx         512   Mar 1 1993 00:12:36 +00:00  c3750e-universalk9npe-mz.150-2.SE1

We know that we have the Web Based Device Manager on this switch because of the directory. The d declares that it’s a directory.

2  drwx         512   Mar 1 1993 00:12:36 +00:00  c3750e-universalk9npe-mz.150-2.SE1

Delete the IOS and the Web Based Device Manager directory.

Switch#delete /force /recursive flash:/c3750e-universalk9npe-mz.150-2.SE1
Switch#dir flash:
Directory of flash:/

  526  -rwx        1048  Mar 30 2011 01:29:31 +00:00  multiple-fs

57671680 bytes total (57668608 bytes free)

There will be a pause while it is being deleted

Next, copy the file from the USB drive to the internal flash.

Switch#dir usbflash0:
Directory of usbflash0:/

    1  -rw-    19842267  Dec 18 2012 15:39:26 +00:00  c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE.bin

1048821760 bytes total (786857984 bytes free)

Switch#copy usbflash0:c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE.bin flash:
Destination filename [c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE.bin]?
Copy in progress…CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
19842267 bytes copied in 52.748 secs (376171 bytes/sec)
Switch#

Verify the MD5 hash on the IOS image (see this post for more info on verifying IOS images)

Switch#verify /md5 flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE.bin
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….Done!
verify /md5 (flash:c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE.bin) = 2b1dba54349766a1669ee1de85b23110

If the MD5 hashes match, reboot the switch and verify the new IOS is running
