Read only ASDM

First we have to configure local AAA. We must configure authorization so we can tell what user gets what level of commands.

aaa authentication ssh console LOCAL
aaa authorization command LOCAL

Next we’ll move the commands for ASDM down to privilege level 3. User accounts above level also have rights to levels below them so you may need to adjust the privilege level.

Next we’ll create a username with level 3 privileges.
username readonlydude password SeCuRePaSsWoRd privilege 3

You should also set the username attributes to admin. This way the account can not be used for other purposes such as authenticating a VPN user.
username readonlydude attributes
  service-type admin

As Cisco adds features to the ASA, you will get errors when checking certain features in ASDM. For example, when I was writing this document I ran across this error-

Obviously I was missing a command that had to do with IPv6 routing. I added the following line to fix it.
privilege show level 3 mode exec command ipv6
